Your VEBA (HRA) plan currently provides medical reimbursements to your non-dependent heir(s) if you have no surviving spouse or qualified dependent(s).  This important benefit will go away in 2009 unless proposed legislation is passed.

Proposed legislation is in committee in both the House and the Senate that could remedy the present inequity toward participants, particularly singles, who die prematurely prior to using up their VEBA (HRA) accounts.  If enacted, Section 5 of either H.R. 1820 or S. 1556 would allow VEBA (HRA) participants to designate a beneficiary(ies) who could receive available benefits if no surviving spouse or dependent(s) remain following a participant's death.  Click on the links below for more in-depth information.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Medical reimbursements on behalf of surviving spouses and dependents will continue to be available.  The upcoming heir death benefit change affects benefits paid to non-dependent heirs only.
